Academic profile

I hold the position of Professor of Production and Logistics at the University of Vienna. My research develops machine learning and optimization methods for complex decision-making problems in logistics and production, with an emphasis on real-world systems where algorithmic speed, reliability, and human judgment all matter.

My research group's work spans industrial applications in supply chains and the maritime industry to optimization for environmental protection. I am interested in how artificial intelligence can support better planning and decision making, and in particular how AI can automatically develop solutions for these critical problems.

Since 2023

We are developing deep reinforcement learning methods that learn to solve difficult optimization problems more effectively, with special attention to the challenge of finding feasible solutions.

Derivative-free decision-focused learning for marine protected area planning

With Prof. Michael Romer, since 2023

This project will create new methods for solving optimization problems under uncertainty. The overall application of the project is biodiversity protection, with the goal of creating optimization methods for marine protected area design.
